Game journal Jan 22: Down in the Dumps...

I actually beat this game yesterday, but forgot to make a post... :P

I should say one thing before I start this mini review, I was slightly euphoric when I play this game, because I've been trying this game to run on XP for eaons and never managed until yesterday, when I use D-FEND (DOSBox Front END) which made it work perfectly...

How to describe this game? Well imagine putting The Simpsons, The Littles and... well aliens in a blender and you'd get this game...

Why am I comparing it to TV series? Because it's presented in "episodes", as if it were a TV series...

You play as the Blubs, your typical dysfunctional familiar, with a stupid fat husband, a wife who wonders why she married him, and punk kid, a girly girl, granpa, grandma and of course what "TV" family would be complete without a pet! Stinkt is the pet's name, and he looks like a fat earless yellow aarvark...

Notice how only the pet has been named? The rest of the family DON'T have names! Why? Probably for a comedy effect? If so it didn't work...

The blub are going to vacation to some paradise planet, when all of the sudden the bad guys (YES, THAT'S THEIR NAME TOO!) are fleeing from a space bank robbery and collide with the Blub's spaceship...

They both crash on Earth, and you immediately notice that they are barely an inch high!

When you start the first "episode" you see the "show" intro and start, the first thing you notice is that the game is mostly inventory based, and you can only talk to people, pick items up and use them elsewhere, you can't even look at them...

Thething I like the most about this game is the total freedom, you never screw up, and what's more, you can solve most puzzles in various ways!

But there is a downside that while the puzzles don't make sense sometimes, you can't really do the wrong thing, you see when you hover an item over something and the screen and see something like "use match on pet", you will get a reslut even if it's just something funny that won't help out in the game...

Which means you never get those "I can't do that!" messages, actually, you can't but only if you want to by using an item over something that doesn't give you message...

This makes the games easier, although since there are several ways to beat a puzzle you might be doing several solution at the same time...

The game is full of adult humour, mainly the type you get in Tex Avery cartoons, you know jokes about spouses and mothers in law and also slapstick and potty humour...

The "show" has 5 episodes, and each of them you control a different Blub family member, at fisrt you control the son and try to recover a piece of the ship...

Then you play as the mother trying to stop you grandma who has gone beserk thank to the bad guys, and for some reason you play a TV show..

The third chapter takes place at Christmas where the Blubs ask Santa for a piece of the ship but he's flyinh arounf drunk and drops it off in the middle of nowhere, this episode is a parody of Robin Hood, but with frogs...

The "final" chapter is simply called "The Bum" where you see a bum wearing one of the parts as a earing, he's asleep and you must climb on him, since your so small you get to meet the.. inhabitants of his scalp, and you much convince the louse and tick to wake up the bum...

The real ending, which some people don't even know of, if the departure of the Blubs from Earth, but the ship malfunction in mid-flight and you must use all the Bluns to repair it, this is the most confusing and hardest of the chapters...

The chapters themselves are too short, and the humour isn't all that great, but for once I enjoyed this game specially since I didn't get stuck at all (except for a music puzzle, but I'm tone deaf), it might not be your cup of tea, but it's certainly better that what I've been playing lately (but not better than Shannara or Companions of Xanth!)
