Game journal Jan 07: Frankenstein Through the Eyes of Monster

When I got this game in the mail, I knew I had to play it as soon as possible, I mean, it had the Frankenstein mosnter in it!

And Tim Curry as the Doctor Frankenstein!

As soon as I started playing, I noticed it was very much like Myst, in other words, you just walk around and pull levers...

You do have an inventory, but you barely use it at all through the game...

The plot has nothing to do with Mary Shelly's story or any of the movies I've seen either, although Tim Curry is a great mad doctor, the rest of the game fails to recreate the creepy atmosphere the game should have...

I mentioned before that you'll spend most of the game wandering through way too many mazes, while they aren't that hard, finding another maze when you get out of the previous is just frustrating...

The game itself is quite logical and the "monster" will usually say what you must do and there are tons of note with hints and useful info..

The first thing you do when you "wake up" is try to figure out if you are really alive by recreating the experiment, when you find out it's true you try to escape before he finds out you have taken his notes, just to find angry villagersat the gate, when you return into the castle you find out ever more about the mad doctor and are determined to stop him, the plot is quite intense near the end, but the ending was quite anticlimatic, I won't tell you about it, but it's definetely not how it should have ended in my humble opinion...

Maybe saying this game is Myst like isn't appropiate, they do have some things in common, but this game doesn't have beautiful landscapes, it's quite the opposite actually, but it also doesn't really succeed in being a scary game, except for the odd experiment laying around or chasing you...

While this game isn't an "abomination", it does slightly smell like something died in it, if you know what I mean, Tim Curry's acting and some parts of the plot aren't just enough to compensate for the lack of atmosphere, overly complex mazes and just average puzzles...

I certainly hope the next adventure I play is better...
