Originality and plagiarism rant

Some say that there is nothing original left in the world... I mostly disagree, I think that it's fairly unlikely for something as unique as a new art form to be invented, but it's still possible!

People also say that there is no such thing as an original pun, while many of my puns have probably been done to death, I do believe some of them to be unique, like Drac Yule Log... Visual puns are different because even if two people think the same pun, they are likely to interpret them differently...

There is only one pun webcomic I know of... it seems to have ended now, which sucks because I considered it my rival even though it had a bajillion more viewers I had more and IMHO better puns... But unfortunately every once in a while I did a pun that this comic had already covered, but since it wasn't intentional and mine was done differently I didn't worry much... except this comic sometimes seemed to "point it out"....

At first I thought this comic was blatantly copying my idea since it happened so soon after mine, only to discover that it was a rerun from a few years ago.... Did it really have to rerun a comic just to point out to me it had the idea first? The comic has done it a few times, so it can't be a coincidence... And I can't think of other explanations...

Except... sometimes I would see something I had done in the other comic a week later or so, nearly exactly the same, but this time the comic wasn't telling me I had done the same idea... It was using mine! The difference? It happened a week later and look very much like mine....

What am I getting at? Sometimes, you "steal someone's" idea by accident and sometimes you do it on purpose, sometimes you just happen to have the same idea someone else had, maybe you had seen it before and you subconsciously remember it, since it happened a long time ago, but sometimes you remember it perfectly and still do it....

But that's not where this rant ends... It's just the start! I've seen a few people lately complain about plagiarism where I can't really take their side....

This is where originality and complexity take part in the equation, because the more complex and original your creation is, the more unlikely it is that the alleged copy cat had the same idea instead of just stealing it....

While it is actually possible for a simple design to be very original, at the same time since it's so simple it's very plausible someone else will have the same idea...

I once saw a girl complain that her pink haired catgirl had been plagiarized... Excuse me? Pink haired cat girls are the most cliche thing ever! Unless this "thief" is known for stealing art, you're just being paranoid...

But this is also where the difference between "illustrators" and "cartoonists" have to be taken into consideration, an illustrator draws images with tons of detail and are usually amazing at least, but they aren't sequential art so they can't really express much of a personality with just ONE drawing, as beautiful as some of these are.... many feel... lifeless? More like plastic dolls than those wacky characters that live in cartoonists minds, they might be less detailed, but they always seem to be more alive and have a personality and obviously they have stories to show that they have a personality and are alive, at least in their creator's mind...

What does this have to do with originality and plagiarism? To put it simply, sometimes illustrators forget that we can't see the same character that they have in their minds, this pink haired catgirl might look like another, but might actually be different in their creators mind...
But does it matter if they look the same? Not to the person who think it's been stolen, unfortunately...

And to close it up, when I was going to create Power Pexx I was kind terrified, I was worried not only that it had done before, but that it had done before by someone willing to sue me for stealing it's idea.... I did some research to make sure such a thing didn't exist before, but then I realized that I could never be sure, so.... If you're going to create something, you might want to do some research, but don't spend too much time on it... The chances of you creating something that's close enough to something else by chance is small, unless it's something cliche like pink haired catgirl....
