Darwinia rant...

I finally beat Darwinia, and I feel like talking about it...

I've already talked a bit about it, but I explain it in depth now. Dr. Sepulveda (possible a homage to Sir Clive Sinclair) is a genius who invented a supercomputer that due to a series of unfortuante events he wasn't able to sell...

He was never seen again...

He had a factory full of them, and one day he clustered them together in a network and invented hyperprocessing, and attempt to create something better than any human brain, and created the Darwinians, who where self-aware and evolved with each generation, he called their land Darwinina and watched them flourish until one fateful day....

Virii attacked Darwinia, and everything was nearly wiped out! Dr. Sepulveda closes all connections to try to prevent futher damage when you walk in...

Techniaclly, what you do is execute programs to repair Darwinia, you start with a squad progrma to destroy the virii and an engineering program to repair and reprogram, as you advance you will find parts of Dr. Sepulveda's research which will aid you in your quest and even new programs! Meanwhile, Dr. Sepulveda helps you out by researching on the "programs" you have, giving you more advanced programs that make the game easier. You decide what he can research on and it slighty affects the game since you'll probably finish it without reasearching everything to the max, which means you SHOULD choose carefully!

The worlds are full of control tower, which is the only place you can execute programs, radar dishes to teleport non-flying programs over islands, incubators to creat Darwinians from the data left behind by the virii and trunk ports which you must open to access other levels...

Nearly all of these have been infected and need to be reprogramed by the engineer...

I love the strategy part in the game, just when a level seems impossible, I find a secreat route or find a move effective tactic, sometimes they leave buildings unguarded or barely guarded and my engineer can reprogram the control tower so I can't start right in the fray!

These is one level where you must rescue 100 Darwinians, and you must get them though a virii infested island where they will keep respawing... Unless you figure out the easy way like me. He, he, he...

At a certain moment the Darwinians should know how to defend themselves, because you will encounter infected Darwinians which are quite numerous, a certain level had one of the fierciest battles I've seen in a while! This is where you'll notice the AI, of the Darwinians, specially the evil ones, they know when you defenses have a week spot and that they should attack it and they know when to retreat...

The final level was the most challenging and interesting, finishing off the virii invasion will takes all your skills!

The downside? Too short! Not that many levels for a strategy games, but when you beat it, Dr. Sepulveda will give you full access and you can access everything and create and use mods!

Even though it was slighty steep for an independant game (30€ + S&H) and short, I still enjoyed it and recommend for people who want to try something different....
