Don't these sandwiches use a special type of bread? We only have sliced bread and the "hardened shell" loafs... I don't know of any kind of bread that's soft as sliced bread but in loaf form over here, but I can always ask the baker?
To do a submarine sandwich, you need baguette. Panini can also be used. Basically, to make a sandwich like that, you'd probably need French or Italian bread. Really, it just needs to be long and a bit fluffy. I have looked around on Google, and I saw some sandwiches with fried squid in them, that bread looks about right.
