Game Journal June 29: Astérix & Obélix XXL 2: Mission Las Vegum

Good GOD! How long has it been since I've posted a game mini review? Way too long!

Anyway, the game takes on the adventures of Astérix and Obélix, who I hope you know well. They receive a visit from a traitor to Rome called...  Sam Shifer... Who has an infrered helmet, sound familiar? It won't be the only time you have that feeling playing this game. The spy / traitor tell the gauls that Getafix, their druid has betrayed them and captured all the druid that still resist Rome. The druids are actual characters from the original comics, but only ONE of them is really a druid in the comics...

Then you see Caeser talking to his newest general.... Larry Croft... Who has a ponytail and wears some tight shorts... *shivers*

Yes, you've noticed, right? It's parody game... I better get this out of the way ASAP, because it's the most interesting part of the game...

You see, the druids are held in a theme park called Las Vegum where everything is theme based, which the game designer thought would be a good excuse to to fill it with game characters...

You can barely take a step without seeing a game reference or cameo, most of the Roman soldiers are dressed up. Some have a Pac-Man shield, some are dressed as Mario and have that water shooting packback, and then there are Sonic, Rayman, Ryu (with a Hadoken even) Roman soldiers too! And then the theme park itself is filled with references...

You will see Pey'j from Beyond Good & Evil, Princess Peach, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Bomberman, Soul Reaver, Soul Calibur, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Space Invaders, Tetris, Tekken, Chocobos, Lemmings, Donkey Kong, Super Monkey Ball, American Mc Gee's Alice, Link, Sly Racoon, God Of War, Ratchet & Clank, Slippy from Starfox, the Atari symbol, Pikmin, Capitan Olimar, The Sims, Pokémon and XIII... There are also non game reference like the NBC logo, MGM, the Internet, Mickey Mouse...

The game starts simple and there is lots to explore, but as you progress the levels become more challending but much shorter...

You can tell they rushed the game, by the final level they don't even bother to add any references and the bosses are the same except they become slightly more challenging......

Since the game is mainly bashing Romans all the time, to make it less tedious they added some special moves to be used when you get a magic potion, which come in handy because eventually you'll have to defeat 200 Romans to open the door to the next area...

Frankly, the game IS fun, and you might enjoy it, specially if you are a fan of Astérix. I guess they simply expected people would simply buy it for the parody value? Sooo, it's short, fun and funny, it's challenging enough, but I think you should try to get it cheap or rent it...
